Scleral Contact Lens

Dr. Cao specializes in scleral lens fitting at Two C Eye Care in Manvel, TX. Scleral lenses are specialized contact lenses used in the management of keratoconus, post-penetrating keratoplasty (corneal transplant), and dry eye.

Scleral contact lenses are recommended for patients who a struggle with poor vision, where glasses or regular soft contact lenses will not improve vision. These patients include those with kerataconus or patients that had corneal transplant surgery. Scleral lenses give these patients the opportunity to see clearly again.

Scleral lenses are also indicated in patients with severe dry eyes. It allows patients to see clearly and be symptom free from dry eyes.

The cornea is the clear central layer of the front of our eyes. It is one of the optical surfaces of the eye. The shape and condition of the cornea contributes to our visual clarity. The sclera is the white part of our eyes.

Scleral contact lenses are rigid contact lenses that cover the entire cornea and rests on the sclera. It works by creating a smooth surface with a fluid layer that sits between the cornea and the hard lens. This allows for clearer, more crisp vision. The liquid layer serves two purposes: it creates a new optical surface by filling in any imperfections in the cornea surface to correct a patient’s vision and provides all day lubrication to alleviate dry eyes.
